More than 600 people have already filled out the questionnaire that Zsófia Horváth, the MyPond project leader and employee at the Institute of Aquatic Ecology, put together with her colleagues to assess Hungary's garden ponds.
So far, the majority of answers have been received from the capital and its surroundings, but so far the survey revealed that people do not only create small ponds in significantly urbanized areas. Ornamental lakes play a major role in maintaining or even increasing biodiversity, and reduce the heat island effect, making the increasingly hot urban climate more bearable as a biocooler.
